Aesthetic nose surgery, which is often known and performed by us is called rhinoplasty in medical literature.

What is often desired to perform in the rhinoplasty procedure is to reshape the nose so that it is concordant with face and itself and also maintaining its function or, if any, eliminate respiratory problems.

This procedure can be applied on young girls after the age of 16-17 and on boys after 18 subsequent to the completion of puberty. The fact that there is no change in the growth of a person within the last 6 months will be a leading factor about completion of puberty.

Information about expectations should be given by making an in-depth pre-interview with patient and listening to the complaints before the rhinoplasty surgery. A pre-planning is performed on photos taken before the operation in order to prepare for surgery, this pre-planning is discussed with the patient and he is informed about existing deformities.

The best surgical technique is that where the surgeon feels most comfortable. Two most contemporary methods are; closed rhinoplasty where the operation is carried out entirely inside the nose with surgical camera and lighting systems or open rhinoplasty where an incision is made to the tip of the nose which doesn’t leave any scar. The aim of both methods is to obtain a result that the nose is concordant with face and itself as well as maintaining its functions. The surgery takes 1.5- 2 hours under general anesthesia. Nasal bones and cartilages are reshaped using thin blades and rasps and respiratory problems, if any, are eliminated. A tampon is not used unless it is necessary, the nose is bandaged and a special splint is applied after the procedure. Bruises and swellings may arise during the first 2-3 days however these decompose very rapidly after the third day.

The splint on the nose is removed on the 6. -7th day after the operation. Duration of hospitalization is 1 night, nevertheless it is possible that you spend the evening at home after operations that have been performed in the mornings. The swellings which may develop within the first three days diminish rapidly towards the 7th day and the patient easily returns to his daily routine. The first 6-8 weeks are important in the post-operative period; the patient should be warned and informed about trauma, use of eyeglasses, hard nose-blowing, sneezing and arduous sport activities in this period. Patient expectations about the early results after rhinoplasty are high but it should not be forgotten that the nose will take its final shape within 6 – 12 months.

Rhinoplasty Requires Accuracy and is Precise.

  • It requires precision because the nose is located in the middle of the face.
  • It is of great importance due to its significant respiratory function.
  • The nose anatomy (thinness/thickness of skin, differences in cartilage and bone structure) varies from person to person. It should be known that these differences have an impact on the result too; for example, it should be known that a nose skin which is thick and oily may not demonstrate workmanship.
  • Rhinoplasty is not an operation where the nose is made smaller. It is an operation where most of the time an expansion of nasal root and nasal dorsum is necessary.
  • Having a previous nose operation, an experience of nose trauma, facial asymmetries, thick and oily nose skin and a thin cartilaginous structure are factors which decrease the likelihood of success after the operation and necessitate the selection of a surgeon who is experienced in rhinoplasty.
  • With a rate of %5, secondary interventions, which can be performed very easily, may be required after rhinoplasty surgery.
